Newcastle Disease, Marek's, and common poultry diseases in Zimbabwe. Vaccination schedules and early warning signs.
Read Guide βA major requirement for successful early chick development is minimal challenge from bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, molds and parasites. Thoroughly clean and disinfect your house before chicks arrive.
Use Maxi range disinfectants (Ultrasept, Maxi Virus Killer, Farm Guard) available at all Novafeed outlets. Follow the mixing ratio on the label. Allow the house to dry completely before placing bedding.
π‘ Tip: Purchase your Stress Pack vitamins at the same time as your chicks. Add to water for the first 3β5 days to reduce transit stress and boost early immunity.
The choice of diet at any particular stage in the production process can have an important impact on the overall profitability of a broiler operation, both in terms of input costs and technical efficiency.
As birds grow, their energy requirement increases relative to their protein requirement. Feeding different diets leads to over or under-feeding of these two critical and expensive components.
For smaller operations or farmers who prefer simplicity, the 2-phase programme delivers strong performance without managing three product transitions. StartMax covers the starter phase; GrowMax covers grower through finisher.
π‘ Tip: Never run out of feed between phase transitions. A 6β12 hour feed gap during a critical growth window can cost you a day of growth that you cannot recover.
The right lighting hours improve feed intake, growth, and reduce stress in your flock. For layers specifically, light duration controls egg production cycles:
Novafeed's layer range is designed around three production stages:
π‘ Tip: ISA Brown hens are some of the most productive layers available. Book your point-of-lay birds from Novafeed β fully vaccinated and production-ready.
Boschveld, SASSO, and indigenous breeds have different genetics to commercial broilers. They grow slower, are more disease-resistant, and have a distinctive flavour that commands a premium in the market.
Standard broiler feed is not ideal for road runners β it's over-formulated for their slower metabolism. The Novafeed Road Runner range is calibrated specifically:
π‘ Tip: Free-range road runners still benefit from supplementary feed. Birds foraging without supplementation struggle to meet their nutritional requirements, especially during dry season when insects and vegetation are scarce.
Zimbabwe's Highveld winters (JuneβAugust) can see temperatures drop to 5β10Β°C overnight. Day-old chicks require 32β35Β°C in their immediate brooding zone. The gap between ambient and required temperature is the enemy.
Nova Infrared Lamps are available at all Novafeed outlets and provide consistent, reliable heat that is easier to manage than gas brooders in small-scale setups.
π‘ Tip: Do a heat test 24β48 hours before chicks arrive. Run your heat sources with the house sealed and confirm the floor temperature is at target before placing chicks.
Newcastle Disease (NCD) can wipe out your flock with little or no warning. It is endemic in Zimbabwe and poses a constant threat to unvaccinated birds.
π‘ Tip: Novafeed day-old chicks come vaccinated. Always confirm vaccination history when buying birds from any source. A cheap unvaccinated chick can cost you the entire flock.
